Artisanal know-how in the heart of the Rumilly-Albanais region

Jean-Marie Hermant, better known as the JM Earth, is a potter installed at Marcellaz-Albanian. For almost eight years, he shapes with passion opportunities, unique pieces in enamelled stoneware, combining aesthetics and utility. His meticulous work and mastery of turning techniques allow him to create a tableware as beautiful as it is functional.

The magic of stoneware and homemade glazes

JM Earth shapes with passion sandstone, a clay rich in silica which, once fired at high temperature, becomes smooth, resistant and durable. To give his pieces all their character, he creates his own enamels (vitrified coatings applied to ceramics to give it color, texture and protection) from natural mineral powders, such as chalk, calcium carbonate, bone ash or iron oxide. Each recipe reveals subtle and deep hues, giving birth to unique finishes

When asked what his favorite piece is, JM Earth admits that it is difficult to choose. However, he has a weakness for its matte white pie dishes. He also likes his more original creations, like the reblochon boxes or the “solidarity pitcher” with two spouts. Designed to serve two glasses at the same time, it allows you to no longer drink alone, but rather as a couple.

A profession rich in emotions and encounters

To Jean-Marie, pottery is a never-ending adventure, punctuated by several stages: preparation of the clay, throwing, glazing and firing. It enjoy especially the conduct of his manual oven, which allows him to experiment and play with fire to create unique effects. But what he love above all, it is to share his passion. During the pottery markets or in his workshop, he introduces the curious to the pleasure of modeling clay.

"If it's a dream, you have to go for it!" he says. to all those who wish to start pottery. Indeed, pottery is a demanding profession, requiring time and determination but it also offers immense freedom. Of course, the solitude of the workshop can be surprising, but Exchanges with visitors and customers bring a nice human wealth.
