A successful hike is first and foremost a well-prepared hike! Whether you're going for a short family stroll or several hours of walking, a few good habits will allow you to fully enjoy the trails, while respecting nature and other users.
Before you leave: prepare your hike
Before putting on your shoes, take a few minutes to check your route. Distance, elevation gain, duration, and level of difficulty should be adapted to your physical condition and that of the entire group.
Also consider:
- consult the weather forecast and any ongoing alerts;
- plan enough water and food ;
- wear good shoes and suitable clothing;
- take one sunscreenwarm or waterproof clothing depending on the conditions;
- keep your charged phone and, if possible, have the offline route available;
- Inform a relative of your route, especially for longer hikes.
During the summer period, also check for any restrictions on access to the mountain ranges related to fire risks, drought or weather conditions.
On the trails: respect the environment
Hiking allows you to discover natural spaces that are sometimes fragile. A few simple actions help to preserve them: stay on marked trails, do not pick flowers, and take all your rubbish with you.
You will also be crossing agricultural areas and private properties: close fences and gates , respect crops and go around herds without disturbing them.
If you hike with your dog, keep it under control and respect local regulations. Its presence may be prohibited in certain natural areas or near livestock.
And above all: know how to adapt
An approaching storm, intense heat, a trail more challenging than expected, or simply a sudden bout of fatigue? Turning back is also part of hiking. Don't overestimate your abilities and always adapt your outing to the current conditions.
Well prepared, well equipped and respectful of the areas you cross, all you have to do is enjoy the journey… and the scenery!
